The national PE & Sport Strategy for Young People sets out how the Olympic legacy aim to get more children and young people taking part in high quality PE and sport will be reached through the offer of five hours of sport each week for children.

School sport

Whatever you child’s interests, their first taste of sport will come at school as part of physical education or after school clubs.

As parents we all remember our school days and our PE teacher!  Whether you loved PE or not in your childhood, it's important to remember that times have changed and sport in schools is now very different.

Since the Government recognised that children were getting a raw deal, huge investment has led to more PE and school sport taking place in our schools and better opportunities for our children.  Over the last ten years the Government has invested £2.3 billion into children and young people’s sport. Last year an additional £100m was made available to extend every child’s participation to five hours per week, including two hours within the school day.

Long term, there is a desire that children will begin to choose physical activity more frequently, while they are young, which will increase the chances that they will become lifelong participants in fitness and health related activities as adults.

PE and school sport improves the lives of our children and can raise the quality of their education.

Schools are now providing PE as part of the national curriculum and a wide range of extra curricular sporting activities. This section provides parents with a guide to what you can expect.
