Sports system explained
Do you want to help steer your child through the sports system but are not sure how it fits together?
British sport is not run by any single body. Many different organisations play a part and the roles they play and the links between them can be confusing.
Most sport is played in amateur sports clubs which are run by volunteers. Our club and venue finder on the right can help you to find where, for example, your nearest cricket or tennis club is. Amateur sports clubs are independent bodies and do not report to their local council. Many run junior sections providing coaching and competition. They are not licensed or inspected but there is a scheme called Clubmark which tells you that it is well run. Coaches and instructors should be qualified and vetted. You can find out what to look for when choosing a club to take your child to. Many sports clubs are at the heart of their communities and do wonderful work in helping children to enjoy sport.
Many of these clubs will be affiliated to the national governing body which runs their sport. For example the Football Association has responsibility for its sport across England. The link on the right to the a to z guide of sports gives you a flavour of each sport and gives useful contacts at county and national level.
Sports and leisure centres are run mainly by district, borough and city councils. In Nottingamshire, the County Council runs the National Water Sports Centre. You can find out more about leisure centres or what else is being done by your councl to promote sport in your local area.
All of the councils in Nottinghamshire have sports development teams whose job it is to help more people to play sport. You can contact them for advice and information about sport in your local area. The County Council has a large sports service which offers help to sport across the whole of Nottinghamshire.
This website is managed by the County Council but with the help of other councils, national governing bodies and sports clubs across the county. We have come together to try to give you the clearest and most comprehensive guide to sport in the county.
